Exercises "On time / in time" - "At the end / in the end"


Complete the sentences with on time or in time.
    Example: The train was late this morning, but it's usually on time.
  1. The match was supposed to start at 10.30 but it didn't begin
  2. I like to get up to have a big breakfast before going to work.

On time and in time
On time means punctual, not late! Something happens on time, when it happens at the time that was planned.
  • I have a rendez-vous with her at 6.30 pm. OK, hurry up and be there on time
    ==> don't be late, try to be there exactly at 6.30 pm. (punctual!)
  • The concert started and ended up on time as it was planned.
  • The 10.00 pm match between Germany and Algeria began right on time
    ==> it began exactly at 10.00 pm.
  • P.S.: As you can notice, the opposite of on time is late.
    be on time please! ==> don't be late!

In time means soon enough for something or to do something!
  • I'm hurrying up to get home in time for the match.
    ==> soon enough to watch the match!
  • I've sent my son a birthday present. I hope it arrives in time (for his birthday).
    ==> soon enough for his birthday.
  • Jazz is going to be home in time for dinner.
    ==> soon enough for dinner.
  • P.S.: As you can notice, the opposite of in time is too late.
    Janeel got home too late to see the match!
  • Its also possible to say just in time.
    ==> which means almost too late.
    1. James got to the airport just in time to catch the flight.
    2. I stopped the car just in time.
      ==> just before the train crosses the road.


At the end and in the end
At the end means at the time (when) something ends up!
  • At the end of the game. ==> when the game comes to its end.
  • At the end of the day. ==> for example when the sun sets down.
  • I'm flying to LA at the end of january. ==> at the end of the month.
  • P.S.: By the way, in the end of is banned.
    The opposite of at the end is of course at the beginning. ==> at the beginning of the day.

In the end means finally, it's about the final result of a situation!
  • Germany struggled 90 minutes against Algeria, but in the end won the match.
    ==> finally they won the match.
  • At the end of the day. ==> for example when the sun sets down.
  • The school year was hard. In the end I passed all my exams. ==> I finally passed all my exams!
  • P.S.: The opposite of in the end is often at first.
    ==> At first I didn't realise it was raining, but in the end I ran back home.

Übungen: Aktiv - Passiv

Active or Passive: Choose whether the verb is active or passive.
    Example: The movie is being made in Hollywood. passive
  1. The money was stolen.
  2. I washed my car three weeks ago.
  3. The national anthem is being sung by Jason this time.
  4. It would have been fixed on the weekend.
  5. I will introduce you to my boss this week.
  6. His hair was cut by a professional.
  7. The teacher read the book to the students.
  8. I ate a piece of chocolate cake.
  9. They are paid on Fridays.



Rewrite these sentences. Instead of using “somebody/they/people” etc. write a passive sentence.
    Example:
    Somebody cleans the room every day.
    The room is cleaned every day.

  1. They are building a new ring road round the city.


  2. They cancelled all flights because of fog (Nebel).


  3. People don’t use this road very often.


  4. They have postponed (verschoben) the concert.

Pronomen - Pronouns

Verwendung
Pronomen werden meistens verwendet um Personen, Dinge, Pflanzen und Tiere zu bezeichnen!
"Pro" "nomen", wie der Name lautet, bedeutet "für" "Nomen oder Namen".
Man unterscheidet im Englischen, wie in viele Sprachen:
  1. Das Personalpronomen ?
  2. Dies vertretet eine Person (Singular) oder mehrere Personen (Plural) und auch der Name eines Dinges. Da geht's um Ein Nominativ.
    Z.B.:
    • I have money.
    • You like her.
    • He/she/it is sick.
    • We play.
    • They dream!
  3. Possessivbegleiter ? and Possessivpronomen ?
    Ändert das Substantiv, zeig dem Besitz!
    • My money.
    • Your sister.
    • His brother
      Her sister
      Its speed (of the car).
    • Our game.
    • Their family!
      Subjekt des Verbs.
    • A friend of mine.
    • The car is yours.
    • That's my brother's bike. The bike is his.
      My sister mistook my jacket and let hers there.
      The dog haven't eaten jetzt, the food in the box is its.
    • These glasses are ours.
    • There are two keys, ours and theirs!
  4. Objektpronomen ?
  5. Funktioniert wie das Objekt eines Verbs oder einer Präposition. Wird als Akkusativ und Dativ betrachtet!
    Z.B.:
    • This is between you and me!
    • My brother is a nice person, I love him!
    • I don't know this girl, but I admire her.
    • Where is the glass? Well, I put it on the table.
    • She told us (that) she was new here!
    • Would you meet them before leaving?
  6. Reflexivpronomen ?
  7. Man verwendet Reflexivpronomen, wenn das Komplement (Objekt) des Verbs der gleiche wie der Subjekt ist; auch, um mehr Gewicht auf die Subjekt oder Objekt zu geben. (Emphasize)
    Z.B.:
    • I hurt myself.
    • Do it yourself please! plural ==> yourselves
    • He looks at himself in the mirror.
      She usually does her homework by herself.
      The building broke down itself.
    • We're trying to solve the problem by ourselves.
    • The kids are taking care of themselves!
